How is migraine evaluated?

Evaluation combines a detailed history and headache pattern with a neurological examination and, when appropriate, testing of vestibular, oculomotor, cervical, autonomic, and cognitive contributors.

The goal is to identify which systems are contributing to a given migraine pattern so care can be targeted. That may include a screening neurological exam, cervical assessment, balance and coordination testing, oculomotor and vestibular testing, and orthostatic checks.
Imaging is not routine for typical migraine. It is used when the history, exam, or specific red flags indicate that structural or vascular problems need to be ruled out.
