FAQ · Migraine and Headache

What is post-traumatic migraine?

Short answer

Post-traumatic migraine describes migraine features that develop or worsen after a head or neck injury — typically a concussion, whiplash, or auto accident.

More detail

Trauma can trigger new migraine in people who never had it before, or worsen a pre-existing pattern. Cervical involvement, vestibular and oculomotor changes, autonomic dysregulation, and sleep disruption often coexist and each may need targeted care.

Because post-traumatic migraine overlaps with post-concussion symptoms, distinguishing which features come from which mechanism is part of the evaluation.

This information is educational and general in nature. It is not a diagnosis or a treatment plan, and it does not describe every possible cause of a symptom. Individual evaluation is required to determine what applies to any specific case.
