Why use baseline cognitive testing?
Short answer
Baseline testing establishes your normal cognitive performance so future changes can be measured against your own reference point rather than a population average.
More detail
Because cognitive baselines vary widely between people, comparing to yourself is more meaningful than comparing to a norm. A patient with a very high baseline can still be significantly impaired while scoring 'average' on a first test.
Baseline testing is useful for people with head-injury risk, prior concussion history, family history of cognitive decline, or ongoing concerns about brain performance.
