Peripheral nerves can be irritated where they exit the spine, along their course, or where they cross tight tissues. When that happens, the brain often receives distorted signals from the affected area, which can feel like pins-and-needles, buzzing, or reduced sensation.
Location and pattern matter. Symptoms that follow a nerve-root distribution point to the spine; symptoms that follow a peripheral nerve point to a downstream entrapment; symptoms that involve both hands or both feet often reflect a systemic factor such as blood sugar, thyroid, or medication effects.
Common symptoms or examples
- Pins-and-needles in a specific arm, hand, leg, or foot pattern
- Reduced sensation to light touch or temperature
- Symptoms that worsen with certain positions
- Burning, buzzing, or crawling sensations
What this may mean clinically
A focused neurological exam — reflexes, strength, sensation, and provocative testing — usually identifies the level and type of nerve involvement.
When evaluation may be appropriate
Numbness or tingling that persists, spreads, or is accompanied by weakness should be evaluated. Sudden, severe, or unilateral onset with other neurological symptoms warrants urgent care.
